Importance of Proper Wine Storage

Wine is one of the most widely loved and appreciated beverages in the world, but also one of the most complex. There are so many important issues surrounding wine, in particular how to store it. You can have wine last you a lifetime, as long as you take the time to create an ideal environment.

The importance of finding proper wine storage devices is incredible. If you want to keep your wine from perishing or aging prematurely, you are going to have to make sure that the environment that you are storing the wine in is up to par and proper wine storage conditions.

Of all the different issues that need to be considered when it comes to proper wine storage, there are a few that are of particular importance, and which will be discussed in more detail here.

Temperature

The first thing you need to worry about when it comes to storing your wine is temperature. No other factor will play more of a role in causing your wine to perish than the temperature that it is being stored at. Even though you may not have the ideal conditions for storage, if you have an optimal level of temperature then you will be alright.

The proper wine storage temperature is between 50 and 65ºF, and when stored in this range your wine will develop nicely. If you keep the temperature too cold, the corks in the bottle will shrink and oxygen will be able to enter, and if you keep the temperature too warm the wine will lose flavor.

Position

The position that you store your wine in is also very important. You should always store your wine bottles on their sides, as this keeps the wine in contact with the cork which prevents air from getting into the wine. When the cork is kept moist it will keep from drying out, and this is important because if it dries out it will shrink and allow oxygen to enter the bottle.

Light

For proper wine storage, you need to make sure that there is no direct light shining on the wine. If wine is stored in a hot area or in direct light, the increase in temperature can result in a chemical reaction that can damage the flavor and aroma of the wine.

By keeping these helpful tips in mind and understanding the importance of storing your wine properly, you will be able to make it last and have it taste delicious, even years down the road.
